Telecommuting

Want to work in your slippers? Used to be that you'd need to become an independently wealthy auteur. If you don't suit a diamond-encrusted smoking jacket (and, let's face it, who does?), telecommuting's the way to rock. I've got a few links that may be useful if you're interested in learning more.

Unless you work at some sort of elbows-in-the-machine kinda job, you could try to persuade your boss to let you work from home. The Federal government actually has a mandate to have 25% of their people working from home...by 2002. *sigh* But it goes to show that the tide is turning, and they'll get there in the end. Here's a few links to get you started on this road:

  • The Telework Consortium aims to evaluate technologies and methods to enable telework. A good place to start if you're looking for "How To"s.
  • Folks in the DC area can look to the DC MATAC site which is specifically tailored to Beltway businesses and residents.
  • Jeff Zbar has a lot of good links and articles about telework on Goin' SoHo. He also writes a working-at-home column for Network World.

Alternatively, if you really feel like telling your boss to take his job and shove it (ideally after he's turned down your work-from-home request), there are lots of resources you can use to find a telecommuting gig. Here are a few links for telecommuting job seekers:

  • PortaJobs is a great resource for telecommuting positions.
  • You could come work for our company, Turner Consulting Group (TCG) if you're a whizz-bang J2EE coder/architect, project manager, QA analyst, or business developer!
