Google has announced that it intends to scan books held in certain libraries and make them available online. This is a fantastic idea, and surprising that no-one has thought of it before.
As one of the quoted librarians notes:
It will be disruptive because some people will worry that this is the beginning of the end of libraries. But this is something we have to do to revitalise the profession and make it more meaningful.
I wholeheartedly agree but the disruption is going to be broader than that. Already, folks on Dave Farber's Interesting People mailing list are in a flap about copyright violations and "fair use" laws. Fortunately, there are plenty of folks who will happily argue the opposite!
