In fear of my bandwidth limits, maybe I shouldn't admit liking Peter Torr an enormous amount. His views on security issues with Firefox's plug-in and download infrastructure were featured on Slashdot and, as others have predicted, fanned an already-hot flame. He clarifies his views with a subsequent entry, I love Slashdot.

I recently reconnected with Peter after a few year's break and was delighted to learn that he's as opinionated, educated, and thoughtful as ever. While I don't agree with his views a lot of the time, I have the utmost respect for them. He's often proven right, and I think he has many valid points in this posting. Central to the post, in my view, is the message that Mozilla needs to do a better job of assuring potential users that the software they're getting is secure in acquisition as well as in practice. In other words, their products extend beyond the desktop, and take in the entire user experience, just as they do for any retail experience. Consumers make judgements and values are implied from the first second of any interaction with a vendor or supplier of goods or services. Mozilla cannot except itself from this rule.

In short, to truly address the fundamental needs of the IT-consuming public, the Mozilla Foundation (and other open source advocates) needs to address the broader user experience. This will need expertise beyond the core of Mozilla, the code developers.

Maybe it's time for open source marketing?
