Slashdot pointed to this fascinating story about the development of Apple's Graphing Calculator. Essentially this chap's contract ended at Apple but he refused to let it die, and ended up volunteering his time and sneaking into Apple's office to complete the project
What he found was that similarly-enthusiastic engineers gathered around his cause -- software that would make learning and practising mathematics more fun -- and he accumulated resources that simply wouldn't have been available were he a legitimately-employed Apple contractor!
An enormous lesson lies here: the best ideas, the ideas that last, attract their own resources. That isn't to say that developing them is easy, or without significant obstacles (as this case certainly shows!). But the best ideas create enthusiasm in a broad base of people, given enough time.
