InfoWorld can often be relied upon to provide good summaries of complex technology issues. I like Jon Udell and Tom Yager in particular. On this occasion, Eric Knorr has nicely summarized SAIC's and the FBI's travails with the Virtual Case File (VCF) project. The easy story to write and believe is that SAIC screwed up. But it's always more complicated than simple blame, and Knorr has done an admirable job of explaining why. That said, this summary relies on OIG and Congressional reports to illustrate the government's side of the story, while quoting extensively from SAIC staff that were involved in the project. This seems mightily imbalanced...so I suspect there's even more of a story here than Knorr has explained. All the same, if you're looking for an excellent primer on VCF and what went wrong, this is as good as any I've read.
